As a photographer, you’ve mastered the art of capturing stunning images that tell beautiful stories. Your portfolio is breathtaking, your client experience is seamless, and your Instagram feed is a visual feast. But when it comes to blogging your work, something isn’t quite clicking.
If your gorgeous photographs aren’t translating into consistent bookings, your blog might be the hidden culprit. Whether you’re a wedding photographer, portrait artist, or commercial shooter, avoiding certain pitfalls will dramatically improve your blog’s effectiveness and help you attract your ideal clients. Let’s shine a light on the 7 most common mistakes photographers make when blogging their own work and and how to fix them.
Overloading Posts with Too Many Images
One of the biggest mistakes photographers make is treating their blog like a complete gallery dump. After an amazing engagement or senior session, it’s tempting to share every beautiful shot you captured. However, overwhelming visitors with 50+ images from a single session actually diminishes the impact of your work.
The fix: Be ruthlessly selective. Choose 20-40 of your absolute best images that tell the complete story. Quality over quantity creates a more engaging experience and keeps viewers scrolling through your entire post rather than abandoning it halfway through.
Failing to Properly Name Images
Many photographers upload images with generic camera-generated filenames like “IMG_4521.jpg” or “DSC_0089.jpg.” This is a massive missed opportunity for search engine optimization (SEO) and makes your content nearly invisible to potential clients searching online.
The fix: Rename every image with descriptive, keyword-rich filenames before uploading. For example, “garden-wedding-bridal-portrait-atlanta.jpg” or “newborn-photography-session-studio-denver.jpg.” This simple step dramatically improves your blog’s searchability. However, using more than five words in the title becomes too clunky, so keep it short but precise.
Neglecting Alt Text and Image Descriptions
Search engines can’t “see” your beautiful images without proper alt text. This is the actual description behind the image on your website. It was developed so those with visibility disabilities could read text. Many photographers upload stunning visuals but forget to include descriptive alt text, missing valuable SEO opportunities.
The fix: Write concise, descriptive alt text for every image that includes relevant keywords while accurately describing what’s shown. An example would be “bride and groom sharing a kiss outside at Atlanta wedding venue”. Don’t use more than 125 characters per alt text description. Also avoid the words “image of” or “picture of” since we already know it’s a photo.
Inconsistent Posting Schedule
Before I explain the why behind this common mistake, I’ll be honest and say that EVERYONE gets behind on blogging, including me! We have other jobs, families, life responsibilties so it’s hard to keep a consistent schedule when it comes to our blog. Sporadic blogging confuses both search engines and potential clients. Posting five times one week and then disappearing for a month shows a potential client you’re unprofessional.
The fix: Establish a realistic posting schedule and stick to it, whether that’s weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Also, set aside a couple days a month to specifically work on your blog. Then make sure you’re publishing them at the best time for maximum visability – only during the week and in the morning, at lunch, or late afternoon/early evening.
Weak or Missing Call-to-Action
Many photography blogs showcase beautiful work but fail to guide visitors toward booking. Without clear next steps, potential clients may admire your work but never reach out. You want to keep them on your website as long as possible.
The fix: Include compelling calls-to-action in every post, such as “Ready to book your dream wedding photography? Contact me today!”
Ignoring Mobile Optimization
With most users browsing on mobile devices these days, blogs that don’t display properly on smartphones lose significant traffic and potential bookings. Most websites are already set up to display correctly on modible devices, but double check before you publish.
The fix: Choose mobile-responsive themes and regularly test your blog’s appearance on various devices.
Focusing Only on Pretty Pictures
Everyone loves beautiful photos and you love to show them off because it’s your best work. Why else would you be writing a blog post that includes them? While stunning visuals are crucial, blogs with only images and minimal text miss opportunities to connect emotionally with potential clients and rank in search results.
The fix: Share behind-the-scenes stories, client testimonials, and personal insights that help potential clients connect with you as both a creative and person.
